Flume – ‘Flume’
Rating: 7.5/10
Sydney producer Flume, aka Harley Streten, has quickly emerged as one of the hottest acts out of the Australian electronic scene in 2012. His fame spread on the net with popular remixes of tracks such as New Navys’ ‘Zimbabwe’ and Hermitudes’ ‘Hyperparadise’, and he has quickly built a reputation for himself as a live DJ across Australasia; New Zealand’s Rhythm and Vines recruiting him to their New Year’s line up in Gisborne. His highly anticipated debut album was released last week to the delight of his followers, and it did not take long before it claimed the top spot in album sales in Australia, much to the dismay of fans of One Direction (but to the joy of everyone else with a brain between their two ears). The question remains however, has Australia’s boy wonder managed to beat the hype? Or is he as vacuous as the pop band that he has dethroned? His debut looks set to answer this question.
The first three tracks off the album are certainly a strong start in the right direction, opening track ‘Sintra’ featuring a thumping kick overlaid with the high synth that has pervaded Flume’s music, twisted vocals adding some depth to the piece. The addition of vocals to Flumes’ production has lent character to his music, particularly in the second track ‘Left Alone’ featuring Melbourne producer Chet Faker’s voice over one of the most intoxicating beats off the album, slow drums and smooth synth providing excellent recourse with Chet Fakers swirling vocals. Chet Fakers’ own debut album Thinking in Textures had to be one of the best albums to escape Australia in 2011, and the two artists collaborate well together, hopefully this is a pairing we will see again in the near future. The already infamous ‘Sleepless’ rounds off Flume’s entrance, and with these three tracks Flume has already built a distinctive sound pulling the listener into a summery soundscape, and silencing his critics. ‘On Top’ serves as a welcome lash at those who had questioned the hype in the build up to the albums release. The rest of the album strays little from the winning formula already established, with flashes of particular ingenuity in ‘Space Cadet’, and ‘Bring you Down’, and in it Flume has proved himself to be a solid producer of new wave electronic music.
The album is not as groundbreaking as the hype would have you believe, but it is highly enjoyable, and at the tender age of twenty Flume has a very promising future ahead of him. The top tracks off the album display a natural flair and joy that seems to belong to his music, from the celebratory ‘On Top’ to the floating choruses of ‘Space Cadet’ it is a fitting first album for the young producer. The only complaint that can be given is the lack of experimentation, one song can bleed easily into another with the high synth and sometimes overly simple drum patterns, but this is not unexpected on a debut album and can be easily forgiven. This debut will establish Flume in the scene and give credence to his particular sound, and if he can build on this success by experimenting more with in his production there is no reason to think that he does not have a bright future in the electronic scene. He has built a sound that is fun and distinctive, however I hope that in the next album it will be a mould to break from rather than a pattern to return to.
The Gaslamp Killer is one of those producers who has built a reputation around pushing the boundaries of electronic music; his works creating fusions of bass music, psychedelic rock, alternative hip hop and acid jazz to form a soundscape resembling that of a drug-fueled drive into the Californian desert. Signed to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Label it has always been expected that he would provide something different, his two EP’s My Troubled Mind (2009) and Death Gate (2010) set a high mark with a unique mirage of sounds pieced together from one of the most diverse record collections possessed by any DJ. On both EP’s he showed a talent for integrating a diverse range of synths, drum patterns, echoes and samples to create unique masterpieces of alternative hip hop such as ‘Shattering Inner Journeys’ or ‘Baiafro’. His debut album then has been a long anticipated adventure further into the disorienting mind of The Gaslamp Killer.
Breakthrough is his debut album and a fitting record in the context of his previous bodies of work. It is an album which operates on distinct frequencies, distorting sounds to create melancholic feelings and psychotropic landscapes, pulling the listener through the looking glass. His diverse range of samples is encountered from the very first listen, the second track off the album ‘Veins’ samples the Beatles ‘Eleanor Rigby’ before being transmuted beyond recognition with the help of rapper Gonsafuji. Using a mixture of air-slicing percussion he creates an album that ebbs and flows through a monstrous bass with unique style and acid fueled insanity, keeping any listener on their toes. A certain unpredictability flows through songs such as ‘Dead Vets’ stringing together grand synth along a constantly changing drumline, before launching into the single off of the album ‘Flange Face’, a mad synth pierced only by the strings of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. ‘Seven Years of Bad Luck’ gives birth to an bizarre arrangement of noise between a wobbling mandarin and dynamic chimes. The album comes to a close with ‘In the Dark’ with ambient organ sounding echoes giving way to violins, a voice in the last minute giving a sense to the melancholy built over the whole album, ‘this is the way the world ends…’
Whether or not this album will prove to be the breakthrough for the artist as implied by the title it is not certain. Never in the album is there however a point at which it could be described as either boring or predictable, often there is a sense of the absurd, the bizarre and the strange wrapped in his music. It will not be an album for everyone nor anyone, but it was never meant to be. A DJ and album with all the qualities of being loco.
The Gaslamp Killer will be dropping in New Zealand at the New Year at both Rhythm and Alps (28th and 29th) and BW Campground at Rhythm and Vines (29th, 30th, and 31st). He is widely held to acclaim for his energetic and wild performances behind the decks, one of the must see acts hitting the shores of New Zealand this year.
